Transforming Women from the Outside In
In this issue:
Thirties
These
are the years that most fashion
is aimed at, so it should be the
easiest time of life to dress
and look your best.
However, it can
also be a busy time with new
careers, young babies and
children, and not enough time or
money to spend on yourself.
While you can get away with
simpler, inexpensive clothing,
don't neglect your looks
completely. Take
advantage of trends--they are
made for your age group. Shop in stores and
departments appropriate for your
age, not teen or junior
departments and stores.
Clean out your closet and get
rid of any college sweats still
around. Don't be
afraid to spend more on a few
quality clothing pieces.
Forties and Fifties
Sorry to say, this is where the aging begins.
However, women usually find that they have more time to
themselves during these years, especially if they have
children who are getting older. They can start
wearing nicer outfits, not having to worry about getting
spit-up or toddler handprints on their clothes.
They might be moving up in their careers and needing to
dress for a higher level position, or even starting a
new venture that requires dressing to impress. My
philosophy is not to try to look younger, but to look
your age and look fantastic--AND, don't look any older
than you are! Make sure you have updated your look
since your twenties and thirties. There are a lot
of clothes out there for your age group that are very
chic, fashionable and flattering. If you can't
find them, I can certainly help you. This
Macy's animal print top is very flattering and
age-appropriate. It could be worn with dark or
light neutral pants or skirt and topped with a cardigan
for a complete look.
Sixties,
Seventies and Beyond
I'm not there
yet, but I know a lot of beautiful women in this age
group who are living very full and exciting lives.
Again, the goal is not necessarily to look younger, but to look good
for your age, and not any older than you are. Many
women this age do a lot of traveling, where comfort is
important. It can be more difficult to find
clothing that you like, but I know it is out there. Be
open to new fashions. Just because something is
popular or trendy doesn't mean it's only for the young.
There are usually different versions of trends, which
will work for different age groups. The older you
are, the better quality and more subtle the trends
should be. Here is an appropriate and cute
long gauze skirt from Macy's. It will
look best for casual occasions and travel with ballet
flats or flat sandals.
Tips for Any Age
Here's a website for a great line of bras and other undergarments. It even has a tutorial-type guide for measuring yourself to find the best-fitting bra. Go to www.barelythere.com.
Do any of you get holes in the front of your t-shirts from the rough edges of your jeans? I do, and I found a possible solution. This is called the "Hip-T" and is a stretchy band of fabric that fits around the top of your pants. It also works as another layer under your shirt. Check it out at www.shophip-t.com.
Lastly, I would like to thank the Washington Association of Building Officials for allowing me to instruct an afternoon class for their employees on Looking Your Best. Each of the women learned how to dress for her body type, coloring and style and everyone had fun learning how to tie scarves and dress for the office. They were very welcoming and fun to work with!

My book, 100 Six-Word Lessons to Look Your Best from Head to Toe has more tips on keeping up with trends, dressing right for your own body type and more. Only 9.95.
