Wedding Attire

The season for weddings is in full swing, and finding a proper ensemble can be tricky.  But you don’t have to settle for a black dress; there are plenty of options out there that are both figure-flattering and situation-appropriate.

Day Wedding:

A solid colored dress in a classic style is a great investment that will last for many weddings to come.  This classic strapless dress from J Crew is great option for a day wedding.  The A-line skirt and structured bodice make this dress flattering on most body types, and it comes in many different colors, so you can choose the one that most flatters your skin tone.  The solid color allows for many accessorizing options, allowing you to mix up your style and get the most out of this classic piece.

A floral dress is another great option for day weddings.  An all-over print is a stylish way to make a statement without garnering too much attention.  This dress from Talbot’s has a belt which defines the waist and a skirt that floats away from the body, creating a flattering hourglass silhouette on most body types.  Just remember when considering an all-over floral pattern to keep the size of the print in proportion to your stature.

Evening Wedding:

Evening weddings are typically more formal than day weddings.  While wearing black to an evening wedding is not entirely taboo, there are many more colorful options that are just as formal.  This black mesh dress from Nordstrom has a lilac underlay and a beaded waistline, making it a nice alternative for evening.

This black and white printed skirt from Banana Republic is also appropriate for an evening wedding.  However, avoid wearing too much black and/or white by combining the skirt with a colorful top.

Keep in Mind:

  • Focus on choosing pieces that flatter your body shape and skin tone

  • Avoid showing excessive amounts of skin; when in doubt, stick to more conservative pieces

  • Avoid wearing all black or all white

  • When the weather does not cooperate, use a shawl or cardigan to keep warm

  • While a wedding guest never wants to take attention from the bride, that does not mean she cannot look her best!

Consignment Shopping

In this economic climate, consignment shops are garnering more attention than ever before.  Unlike thrift stores, consignment shops offer the benefits of both buying like-new pieces from customers and offering such items to customers at discounted rates.

If you have items in your closet that you never wear, selling them to consignment shops can be an excellent way to clear the clutter.  Just keep in mind, most consignment shops have specific requirements for buying pieces from customers; they may only buy pieces when they are in season or require garments to be professionally dry-cleaned beforehand.

Consignment shops are also a great choice for finding new pieces.  Though garments and accessories have been previously owned, most are in excellent condition and resemble brand-new items.  Most all consignment shops create a pleasant shopping atmosphere by displaying merchandise as you would find in any boutique or department store.  Best of all, you can find fashionable and designer pieces for a fraction of their original price, which is especially great when shopping within a budget.  It proves you can look your best at any price range if you know where to shop.

There are several consignment shops in Kirkland, Washington that buy and sell a great variety of fashionable items.
