Transforming Women from the Outside In

Briana Pacelli, Research Assistant

In this issue:

  • First Signs of Spring
  • First Lady Style

March can be a rather tricky month.  By now, winter has overstayed its welcome and many anxiously look forward to the arrival of spring.  If you are struggling with what to wear, look no further than this month’s newsletter, devoted especially to looking your best in spring’s hottest trends while keeping warm during the end-of-winter chill.

First Signs of Spring

The weather outside may still be frightful, but you don’t have to wait until July to wear the new spring styles. There are plenty of ways to dress for spring without sacrificing warmth or style.

Cardigan:

Cardigans are very popular right now, and they work especially well over dresses and flowy tops.  Wear a cardigan in a bright color with a summer dress or printed top.

J. Crew has set the standard for cardigans, which they sell in many different colors, patterns, and styles.

Other good options:

Nordstrom

Ann Taylor

Scoop neck long-sleeved T shirt

A solid scoop-neck T shirt works great underneath sleeveless or short sleeve tops or dresses.  The scooped neckline gives the same effect as a camisole underneath lower cut blouses, and the long sleeves provide extra warmth on cool days.  Look for styles that are thin enough to layer without feeling uncomfortable or bulky, and come in a variety of neutral colors you can mix and match with different colored tops.

Old Navy is a great place for inexpensive T shirts to wear with everyday outfits.

For scoop-neck tops that are a little dressier, try Nordstrom

First Lady Style

To the Office Party:

In the eight weeks President Obama has occupied the white house, First Lady Michelle Obama has quickly become a style icon, gracing magazine covers from Time to People to Vogue.  Here we have some secrets to Michelle Obama’s (fashion) success.

Secret #1: High style doesn't have to come at a high price.

Mix high end pieces with budget finds. Michelle Obama incorporates both designer pieces and items from lower end retail stores into her wardrobe.  Her inaugural outfit was a dress by designer Isabel Toledo, which she accessorized with gloves from J. Crew, and during her appearance on The View she wore a dress from White House/Black Market.  This kind of mixing is integral to creating a signature style because it allows you to incorporate unique elements in unexpected ways that reflect your personality (and is easy on your bank account).

Secret #2: Color can make or break an outfit.

Wearing the right colors can flatter your hair, eyes, and skin tone, making the whole outfit look better on you.  Michelle Obama knows she looks good in pinks, purples, and greys, and wears them often.  Find out what colors work best for you, and keep them in mind next time you go shopping. Patty from Look Your Best can help you determine the best colors for you.  Contact her at patty@wardrobe-consulting.com.

Secret #3: Being comfortable is the key to feeling confident.

And by “being comfortable,” we don’t mean wearing pajamas and crocs everywhere you go.  But when you wear clothes with shapes and cuts that help you feel comfortable with your figure, you will feel more confident in your appearance.  Michelle Obama takes advantage of fitted dresses and wide leg pants to flatter her body, but what really stands out in the photographs is her confidence.  Find out which silhouettes will play up your best features, and stick with shapes that work for you.  An appointment with Patty from Look Your Best will help determine your body type and how to best flatter your strong features.
