Fashion in Three Dimensions
Adding depth and dimension is a great way to take an outfit from sub-par to stunning.
The starting point: Dark jeans, solid colored V-neck sweater
Though there is nothing really wrong with this outfit, it does lack personality and individuality, and it could become much more exciting with a few simple changes.
Item #1:
embellished camisole
Adding a camisole underneath the sweater creates depth and interest in the outfit; it shows a little more thoughtfulness than just the sweater alone. Embellishments such as lace or beading are a great way to express personality through clothing and draws attention up toward the face
Straight-laced Seamless Cami, The Limited, $24.50
Item #2:
belt
Belts are a huge trend right now, and they are also an easy way to make an outfit more interesting. Belt the sweater around the waist or at the hips; just keep in mind that a belt will draw attention to wherever it is placed.
Women’s Leather Braided Belt, Old Navy, $12.50
Item #3:
structured jacket
The structured jackets should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe, if only for its ability to instantly create an hourglass shape on practically every body type. Adding a great structured jacket over the sweater brings an air of sophistication for a more put-together look.
Caslon Gathered Waist Jacket, Nordstrom, $78.00
Item #4:
button front shirt
A button front shirt looks great underneath a V-neck sweater, especially if it contains a pattern, such as a stripe, plaid, polka dot, or paisley.
Tommy Hilfiger Majestic Tile Long-Sleeved Shirt, Macy’s, $79.50
You can apply all these items to this outfit at once, or opt for any combination of items. Even the addition of one item will provide the opportunity to express your personality through the clothes you wear.
Evening Doesn't Have to Mean Black
Valentine’s Day gives many women an opportunity to dress up, but keep in mind that “evening” is not synonymous with head-to-toe black. While the little black dress certainly has its place in any wardrobe, there are many ways to add interest to your look for a date night.
Accessorize: Punch up a simple black dress with cool accessories.
Try adding bold and colorful jewelry, such as dangling earrings, a statement necklace, or a cuff.
Add a burst of color with a bright shoe or bag.
It’s O.K. to mix colors and patterns with your accessories, as long as the dress is kept simple and no accessory is too overpowering.
Color: Wearing a complementary color up by your face will make you look fabulous.
Prints: Try incorporating a print into your outfit.
Wear a printed top with a solid skirt or dress pant.
Or, try the reverse: a printed skirt with a solid top.
If you really want to make a statement, go with a fabulous printed dress.
Fit: The individual pieces you choose will do nothing for you if they don’t fit properly. Focus on playing up your best features, and invest in tailoring to ensure your clothing items fit you like a glove. Appropriate fit is the number one way to ensure you look your best, no matter what you wear.
