January is a quite special time of year; the madness of the holidays is over, hectic schedules are replaced with daily routines, normalcy reigns once again. January is also inherently associated with new beginnings, fresh starts, clean slates, and optimistic resolutions. All this makes January the perfect time to give your wardrobe a little TLC, whether that means finally cleaning out your closet, investing in a few wardrobe updates, or committing to a full-fledged style makeover for 2009. This month’s newsletter focuses on helping you succeed in your wardrobe resolutions, whatever they may be. So here’s to making 2009 your best year yet. Happy New Year and Happy new wardrobe!

Flatter Your Figure
No matter your current size or future fitness goals, focus on dressing your body the way it is now. There are plenty of ways to dress that will make you look and feel great, no matter what the scale reads.
If you carry your weight in your stomach/midsection:
-
Look for wide-leg pants to balance out a wider midsection
-
Try wearing a darker color on top and a lighter color on bottom
-
Stay away from very flowy or oversized tops, which will only make your top half look larger than it is; instead, look for tops and jackets with lots of structure
-
When buying pants, make sure they fit the largest part of your midsection, and then have other areas taken in
If you carry your weight in your hips/thighs:
-
Try wearing a darker color on bottom and a lighter color on top
-
When buying pants, look for styles that fit comfortably around the hips and then fall straight down to the floor (no narrowing at the knee or ankle)
-
Wearing patterned tops can help shift the focus up toward the face
-
Avoid pulling tops down over to “hide” the butt and hips; this only draws attention to such areas and makes them appear inaccurately large
If you desire a long, lean, silhouette:
-
V-neck tops make the neck seem longer
-
Layering tops can help break up a longer torso, which makes legs seem longer by proportion
-
Tops or dresses with an empire waist (seam that sits above your natural waist, often just below the bust) give the illusion of longer legs
-
Find pants with a straight leg in a uniform wash
-
Pointy-toed heels (or flats) extend the line of the leg, making you appear taller and leaner
Remember: Patterns, distress marks, embellishments, and accessories draw attention to the areas they adorn, so focus on using such items to accentuate your best qualities
